Feeling Naked on the First Tee: An Essential Guide for New Women Golfers by Ann Kelly |
Debbie Waitkus of Phoenix, founder and president of Golf for Cause, has been named a finalist in the prestigious Athena Awards program from the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. The Athena Award honors businesswomen with the highest levels of professional accomplishments, who excel in their chosen field, have devoted time and energy to their community and open paths so others may follow. The finalists will be presented and the Athena winner announced at a luncheon October 12 at the Arizona Biltmore. Waitkus started Golf for Cause in 2001. Waitkus is an expert on how to leverage the game of golf to enhance business. As a business-golf coach, speaker and writer, she works with organizations and individuals, especially women, to demystify the game and help them "Turn golf into gold". She is active in promoting growth for the game of golf. In addition to teaching business building and networking techniques, many of the programs of Golf for Cause are fund raising events for charity. Numerous organizations have benefited from Waitkus' community involvement, one of the reasons she was named an Athena finalist. Waitkus has presented numerous workshops and educational seminars for businesses and corporations throughout the U.S. as well as private groups. Her speaking topics not only cover golf, but are motivational in nature. She has spoken to groups ranging from the Executive Women's Golf Association and the San Diego Golf Academy to the Society for Professional Marketing Services among others. Her articles have appeared in numerous national and local publications and she has been an expert panelist at the PGA merchandise show on "How to Grow Your Female Customer and Keep Her in the Game". She is a member of the Executive Women's Golf Association, Women in the Golf Industry, Southwest Golf Media Association, National Speakers Association and Arizona Commercial Real Estate Women. Prior to founding Golf for Cause, Waitkus spent six years in the mortgage banking industry, including the role of president for a large private mortgage banking firm. She continues to maintain her active real estate license. Waitkus graduated from the University of Arizona with a BSBA degree, received a Masters in International Management degree from Thunderbird Garvin School of International Management and completed post-graduate work at Harvard. She is married and lives in Phoenix with her husband and two children.
