Anymore, signature golf courses are more known for the architect (designer) than its playability. Located on Tournament Drive in the Virginia Beach-Tidewater area, the Virginia Beach National Golf Club was designed by Pete Dye with Hall of Famer, Curtis Strange, a player consultant.
With five sets of tees from the most ambitious, to the person who know their limitations (and true handicap), the sliding scale of ratings and slopes range from 76.2/142 to 70.7/119.
This very scenic course has all the variety of landscape, rolling fairways, thick wooded areas, strategically placed sand traps, waste areas, with hopefully out of play areas showcasing indigenous variety of grasses, and, of course, lakes and ponds with a never ending thirst for little round, white, dimpled sphere. Sound familiar? Of course, any beach course has its fair share of wind. As Pete Dye is notoriously labeled Dye-abolical do you think this may have been translated onto his course? (Ummmm!)
Although the bermuda fairways help the balls to sit up, there is no guarantee as to its final resting place. Remember, it is not the arrow, but the Indian.
The best way to gain the experience is to dip your toes in its waters, not your golf ball.
Did I say, thank goodness for the 19th hole? Virginia Beach National Golf Club offers its players a relaxing, full-service restaurant and grille, Black Angus Grille. It has repeatedly been voted the best steak house of Virginia Beach. The public is also welcome. Enjoy!
