Needless to say I have lots of stories to tell. Since beginning playing in the 50s, a lot has happened thru the years. I will mention one funny story that happened about 1970. At that time we had a new pro at our club and her name was Shirley Englehorn. She was taking the place of Shirley Spork. Shirley and I became friends and I was invited to Palm Springs with a friend of mine to spend a few days with the two Shirleys. We spent the evening chipping from the carpet into a chair and the next day went out to play La Quinta. On the first hole I got in a trap with a huge lip. After hitting the ball about six times trying to get out of the trap, Shirley Spork comes over to me and said, "If we want to finish before dark, I guess I'll have to give you a lesson on how to hit that shot." She said, "Hood the club face and swing outside and down and the ball will pop out." I did it and sure enough I was back on the fairway. Over all these years, whenever I'm playing with someone that has the same type of shot I say, "Just hit the Shirley Spork shot" (and I tell them what to do). It always works.
