Just when you think there are enough golf magazines, another publication hits the market. Golfer Girl Magazine
is the new girl in town and a first for the industry. It's tagged as "The Only Magazine for Girls Who Love to Play Golf" and targets the youth golf market - girls and young women between the ages of five and 17. The potential market for the magazine is estimated to be 2 million girls and young women.
The 72-page premier issue of Golfer Girl Magazine
will be distributed at all junior golf tournaments this summer, including the Callaway Junior Worlds and the International Junior Golf Tour, and to thousands of girls participating in the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf programs. It was through the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program that LPGA Tour professionals, Morgan Pressel and Brittany Lincicome, discovered their talents and passions for the game. Now they are the role models for the next generation of girls.
The idea for the magazine arose over a year ago, and several pieces had to fall into place before it could become a reality. It's true that "timing is everything." Here's how it happened.
For all of the above and, because I liked Claude, I didn't ponder too long about whether or not to help Golfer Girl Magazine.
I even liked the name of the publication, and told Claude I'd put together an Advisory Board. My next step was to call two industry colleagues to get them on board as advisors. (All advisors serve without any compensation as we believe in this project.)
My second call was to Karen Moraghan, president of Hunter Public Relations. Karen is one of the golf industry's leading media relations and marketing specialists. She has many of the top names in golf as her clients, including the United States Golf Association. Karen and I have previously worked on behalf of women golfers on many industry projects.
Fortunately, the Hootons live in San Diego, which may have the best year-round golf weather in the country. A bonus is that the San Diego Junior Golf Association, one of the most active junior golf associations in the nation, has been a consistent supporter of the new venture.
Nancy Berkley is an expert on women's golf. Her book, Women Welcome Here! A Guide to Growing Women's Golf, published in 2003 by the National Golf Foundation, is the industry reference on how-to attract and retain women golfers. She updates her market research and offers insights in to the women's golf segment on her website www.nancyberkley.com designed for golf course managers and instructors as well as women golfers. Nancy consults with businesses and golf facilities on how to increase participation and revenues from women golfers. She reviews courses for golf travel publications including the May 2006 issue of Cigar Aficianado. Nancy writes the Woman's Golf page for www.cybergolf.com, and is a contributor to www.ladiesgolfjourney.com. She is author of the Golf Corner for New Jersey Garden State Woman magazine www.gswoman.com. A respected resource in the golf industry, Nancy participates in Golf 20/20, the annual strategic invitation-only conference sponsored by the PGA Tour, the PGA, the LPGA, and the World Golf Foundation. She has spoken at numerous golf industry conferences and is available for speaking engagements on a wide variety of topics about women's golf.
