John Daly's Wicked Stick

Grip it & Rip it!

by Dave Johnson

John Daly's Wicked Stick

John Daly's Wicked Stick Links Course

Links style courses such as Wicked Stick, a John Daly signature course, with well placed deep pot bunkers, large sand waste areas, reachable water hazards, with Mother Nature's fickle winds often deciding your club section, can bring you to your knees, a sort of pre-praying position.

Wicked Stick offers four teeing areas, and for the truly adventurous player, a longer excursion from the championship tees to John Daly turf. It's almost like saying how much are you willing to bite off before chewing becomes hard to swallow.

Wicked Stick is touted as a "grip it and rip it" links course. However it is really a more thinking golfer's course, with great emphasis on the risk-reward venue. Before you get to your short game "bump and run" segment, there are a lot of negotiations to be decided first.

If you want fluff, go to a par three course. Otherwise on a "Daly" basis, at Wicked Stick relish this course, its set-ups, and optional choices that face the PGA Touring Pro when not playing the percentages can be "hazardous" to their score.

They do this for a living. We do it for fun, although I wonder if some recreational golfers forget that. Wicked Stick may, at times, cause you to lose your "religion," remember, no pain no gain.

Appropriately, the lounge is named the "Long Ball Lounge," serving all food groups from daylight to late night.

Along with a top notch pro-shop, their Head Professional, Darrell Childers, is quite friendly and willing to go the extra mile to serve us little drones and working bees.

In fact, there is a group of ladies that formed a group called Swingbees, an acronym for Sporting Women Interested in Golf Because Everything Else Sucks, who visit Myrtle Beach annually.

Who knows, while pre- or post-round practicing on Wicked Stick's lighted driving range, be careful, you may encounter one of these "bees," and get stung with their enthusiasm and camaraderie for their genuine love of the game, and their desire to play on courses, such as Wicked Stick to test their mettle.

From my perspective, I still have an almost wistful perception of their "T & A," that being "Thought and Attitude."

Along with a scorecard, before each round, you are given a booklet, that describes in pictures and print, both each individual hole's layout and a short synopsis detailing areas to avoid and various hazards to be aware of. You may choose your tee-off area, after that, let the game begin. Don't say you haven't been warned!
