The Gold Course
The Golden Horseshoe Championship Courses at Colonial Williamsburg

by Dave Johnson

The Golden Horseshoe Gold Course

Reverence. A strict code of conduct. A sense of nostalgia. The lore of yesteryear golf tradition. The first impression that engulfs one.

Most courses, no matter how well manicured, really get their reputation based on the staff and cast of characters. If properly screened, and painstakingly trained, they are that one degree of separation, that contribute to a never ending, and perhaps life altering experience that truly money can't buy.

Red, the designated starter, encaged in his own booth with a huge clock, microphone stand, and an assortment of knick-knacks, is one such character. No matter your status in life you timidly bow to the demands of the gristly, no nonsense starter Red, as he imposes his starter status as you approach the first tee. If you think you have "first tee jitters," wait until Red gets through with you. His art form of the ten minute call, explanation of course rules, piercing blood-shot eyes, and a cigar to enhance his image – one is truly only seen and not heard. We are invading his turf – so it seems.

Once I hit my first tee shot, I sheepishly managed to sneak a peek at Red as we hurriedly drove away. I'm still not sure what Red meant with his sardonic smile as he coyly winked at me. I believe he knew something I didn't know. Guess what – 18 holes later, I understood the essence of his wink.

The Gold Course of the Golden Horseshoe Championship Course was truly magnificent. This property reeks of first class service. I truly understand what it feels like to receive the "royal" treatment. An attendant greets you as you pull in, escorts you to the pro shop, and immediately puts your bag in the cart, making one feel as if you are in a "home away from home." Once the round is finished, another smiling attendant cleans the clubs before helping to stuff those puppies in the trunk of your car.

The Rangers that patrol the fairways are so helpful. Because there are no "weak sisters" out there, an errant shot could be hard to find, and more importantly take time that could promote slow play. The rangers serve as spotters, and make sure each golfer doesn't perform cart abuse by going where no cart should go. One wants to claim their divots, use provided grass seed, and introduce themselves to the greens repair divot tool to keep the course in its pristine condition.

The Golden Horseshoe is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System and has built the demanding course to satisfy environmental planning that uses nature's natural contours to complement each hole to become its own uniqueness. Some may swear at it, some by it, and I to it. Although, it may seem pricey to play to some, believe me, you get what you pay for.

Once finished, I had a startling revelation. Perhaps I should have started on the 19th hole, which is where I was headed in the historic Williamsburg Inn, only a 9-iron shot away from the Golden Horseshoe Course.
