Dog Days of Summer

By Sally Lentz

To all club house personnel, this is not made as a criticism, merely a suggestion… Is it too much to ask for something to grab at the turn - that isn't a hot dog?!

Sally Lentz I understand that your purpose is not to provide an elegant meal. But, come on, cooking equipment has progressed way beyond miniature troughs that spin those grease incased, heartburn torpedoes! It doesn't matter whether you call it a frankfurter, red hot, dachshund sausage, or a wiener - a "gross" by any other name…And who says a sandwich has to be hot? Trust me, there are days when the temperature is at, or close to three digits, and the humidity is right up there too, when a nice cold sandwich would be appreciated. And the egg (heat, humidity and eggs?) salad sandwiches that have been on the top shelf of your beer cooler for who knows how long, don't cut it (sorry) either!

Lately, my group of ladies has gone to packing a little picnic. Nothing fancy, a couple of ham sandwiches, a little bag of grapes, a few crackers and cheese, topped off with a couple of chocolate candy bars (gotta keep that sugar level up). Everything fits very nicely into one of those little cube, soft sided coolers-fits right in the basket of the cart.

Granted, the first time we pulled up to the starter with our little pack, he started to give us a hard time, reciting, "Ladies, I can't let you bring in a cooler, it's against our policy, all drinks must be purchased in the club house." After allowing him to search our "stash" he just shook his head, mumbling, "you're right, doesn't say anything about food, have a nice day" and let us go.

At the end of our round, we were driving our carts over to the drop off area, when the same starter walks up to us and while glancing around nervously, whispers, "Ah, would it be too much trouble for you to bring an extra one… of those lunches… next time you're here? See, I get a free lunch as part of my pay, but to tell you the truth, if I have to eat another hot dog, I think I'll die!"

I rest my case.
