Carol Mann

2008 PGA First Lady of Golf

At 6'3", Carol Mann not only towers over most women and men, but her significant golf achievements and contributions propelled her to the top as the one of the sports most influential players, being named the 2008 PGA First Lady of Golf.

Mann had many "Kodak" moments, beginning her golf career at age 9, and setting numerous records. It was only appropriate that she receive the 2008 First Lady of Golf Award at the ceremony at the Kilbourn Hall in the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York in conjunction with the Senior PGA Champions at Oak Hill Country Club.

After turning professional in 1961, Mann won 38 times including two majors on the LPGA Tour, recorded 23 rounds in the 60s, was the first player to card seven consecutive birdies in a round, set a long string of records on Tour, and achieved many accomplishments that would lead to many changes for the LPGA. Prior to the award ceremony she conducted a clinic for the Executive Women's Golf Association. Mann can attest to how valuable golf is from a social and networking standpoint.

Mann was president of the LPGA (1974-75), serves on various advisory boards, is a leader in increasing girls and women's opportunities in sports, is President of two business ventures, and holds numerous other leadership positions promoting the game of golf.

Mann's The 19th hole: Favorite Golf Stories tells of giving lessons to Russia's Cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin. In honor of the 35th anniversary of Alan Shepard, Jr's. hitting balls on the surface of the moon, Tyruin drove a ball into space from the deck of the Russian Space Station. The ball is still in orbit and the longest in history.

The PGA First Lady of Golf Award, inaugurated in 1998, is presented to a woman who has made significant contributions to the promotion of the game of golf.

When it comes to the 19th hole, everyone has a favorite story. Here the friends and associates of Carol Mann contribute their tales of successes and woes, seeking the humor or finding the inspiration in their golf experiences. All stories are original in this book.
Here we have Jack Lemmon and his famous backwards shot, Tommy Smothers and his yoyo putt, and Gary Player on the drive that knocked him flat. George Shultz and Brooks Robinson remember their holes-in-one, as does Deborah Norville (who was playing high-stakes goofie golf at the time).
All aspects of golf can be found. Joe Dey, a referee, remembers a murderous call. Judy Rankin lauds one of the greatest caddies. Charlie Jones recalls the hardest hole he had to announce on television. James Kemper, sponsor of the tournament that bears his name, looks back on his most expensive shot. Fred Raphael, the man behind the PGA Senior Tour, takes us into the locker room where the all-time greats share their insights and memories. President Gerald R. Ford tells of playing with Bob Hope, who tells of playing with Nancy Lopez. Sam Snead tells of playing while under the influence of love; Buddy Hackett of playing after a long, hard night.
The legends of golf review their greatest- or worst-moments. Jack Nicklaus explains what pressure really is. Patty Berg remembers her first tournament; in head-to-head competition, she lost every hole. Players from the worlds of baseball, basketball, football, racing, swimming and tennis tell of their exploits on the links. Tom Sullivan shows how blindness hasn't kept him from competing with the best; Alan Shepard tells of playing golf on the moon.
All stories-whether from professional or amateur, devotee or dabbler-are guaranteed to amuse.
