Black Mesa Golf Club
Architect Baxter Spann, sets the table (Spanish for mesa) for a great banquet for 18 holes, looking like a wild links course with its swaying native grasses.
For the first course (first tee), you will see a dramatic valley dotted with green surrounded by arroyas while sandtraps and sandhills act as a magnet for your ball.
And the main course is more abundant with large portions of fairways and greens, but there is a lot of roughage to make you concentrate to keep your ball in play. We weren't disappointed in seeing wild life either as a coyote intrigued us running through the arroyos.
Don't look for a level tabletop on the greens either. Rolling, sloping, elephant burial grounds may be more descriptive.
And for dessert, you'll taste your experiences of the day. You've had ample time to practice all your shots from high above the fairway to low below the green.
Ranked #1 Best New affordable Golf Course by Golf Digest (2006) and Top 10 You Can Play by Golf Magazine (2003), add this to your list of golf courses to play.
Ladies, the course is playable for women with 5162 yards, slightly over the "4,725 for the average woman" estimated by Betty Cuniberti, Golf for Women magazine, but it will be a test to keep your mind, body and spirit in one place.
Pull up to the table and say your prayers, the experience of playing Black Mesa Golf Club is a blessing.
